What Is Web Accessibility and How It Improves User Experience
Web accessibility is the creation of content that is accessible to users who experience a wide range of impairments such as cognitive, physical, visual and auditory difficulties. By designing with these impairments in mind it allows a wider range of users to interact with interfaces that are better understood and easier to navigate.
Web accessibility is becoming increasingly more prevalent due to its importance and increases in legislations which require websites to comply with common web content practices.
REGULATORY OBLIGATIONS FOR ACCESSIBLE WEBSITES IN THE UK AND US
Here at Reach we make sure that no matter where your company is residing that each digital product is compatible for your country’s regulatory standards. Over recent years web accessibility has become legally required to pass regulatory compliance so it’s important that your websites are up to date to avoid any risk of non-compliance.
GET IN TOUCH
UK
In the UK The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations came into force in 2018 making accessibility a requirement in website or mobile applications. Failure to comply may lead to potential complaints, enforcement action by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and potentially a legal claim for discrimination by the Equality Act in 2010.
US
In the US, the digital content must be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. These four principles are the foundation of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which was amended in 2018 to incorporate Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as a success level criteria.
