Cryptocurrency integration for Shopify store

Written By Thomas King
Date 9 April 2021

Towards the end of 2020 (less said about that year the better, yeah?!) we were approached by Watches of Wales to create a Javascript-based integration and Middleware API module to enable their customers to pay via cryptocurrency by linking them seamlessly to the Utrust payment gateway. Working alongside the Trust team with their existing API we were able to contribute to this important development for our client.

Building on the existing platform

With the store being built upon the Shopify platform, this brought some restrictions and complexities to the fore (which we enjoy in a sadistic kind of way!), specifically related to Shopify’s current Payment SDK, but nothing that we couldn’t overcome. The finished integration is now fully implemented and seamlessly working end-to-end. This will enable end users to pay by a selection of cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT) via the ShopifyPlus platform.

If you are interested in adding this payment option to your ShopifyPlus site it’s worth looking at how this could increase your conversion rate and customer base with the growing popularity of cryptocurrency in today’s market.

“The global cryptocurrency market size stood at USD 754.0 million in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 1.758.0 million by 2027, exhibiting a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 11.2% during the forecast period.”

Advancements in technology

With advancements in technology developments, virtual currency exchange methods have been invented and evolved rapidly in the last few years. Whilst cryptocurrency was originally developed for transactions within social and gaming economies, it is now widely used by the general population as a means of online trading. Due to the COVID situation there has been an exponential growth in demand for online payments across the board.

We are pleased to see that Utrust (in partnership with Watches of Wales) have shared their latest blog post which can be read here.

We wish Watches of Wales all the best with their pilot cryptocurrency payment solution – watch this space.
